All About Pesach

Everything you need to know about Pesach (Passover)

First Seder Night: Wednesday Evening, 1st April 2026

Pesach is an eight-day festival (15th–22nd Nissan) commemorating the miraculous deliverance of the Jewish people from slavery in Mitzrayim (Egypt). The centrepiece of Pesach is the Seder — a special evening of rituals, storytelling, and symbolic foods that bring the story of Yetzias Mitzrayim to life for every generation.

The Seder

The Seder night is the focal point of Pesach. Families gather around the table to fulfil the mitzvos of the evening:

Matzah

Eating matzah — unleavened bread — because our ancestors left Mitzrayim in such haste that their dough had no time to rise.

Maror

Eating bitter herbs to remember the bitterness of slavery and the suffering endured by our forefathers.

Arba Kosos

Drinking four cups of wine, corresponding to the four expressions of redemption promised by Hashem to Bnei Yisroel.

Haggadah

Recounting the story of Yetzias Mitzrayim from the Haggadah, fulfilling the mitzvah to tell the next generation.

Chametz

From midday on Erev Pesach until the end of the festival, it is forbidden to eat, own, or derive benefit from chametz — any food made from wheat, barley, rye, oats, or spelt that has been allowed to rise (leaven).

In preparation for Pesach, Jewish homes undergo thorough cleaning to remove every trace of chametz. On the night before Pesach, a ceremonial search for chametz (Bedikas Chametz) is conducted by candlelight, and the following morning any remaining chametz is burned (Biur Chametz).
